Coronavirus claims first death in Greece: 66-year-old man in Patras

Greece’s authorities confirmed the first death of coronavirus. The first victim of the pandemic in the country is a 66-year-old man who passed away in the university hospital in Patras in the early morning hours of Thursday.

The retired teacher was struggling in the Intensive Care Unit for several days

The man from Amaliada, Peloponnese, contracted the virus during a pilgrimage in Israel from which he returned to Greece end of February.

He went to the hospital on March 2 and was intubated four days later.

Before contracting the virus, thee man was underlying other health problems such as heart issues.

The majority of his co-travelers, including his wife, have been infected with the virus. Several are hospitalized in the designated hospital in Patras, others are in house isolation.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Greece was 99 on Wednesday. Two of the infected are intubated in ICUs in Patras and Thessaloniki.

Every day, health authorities report of new cases.

Greece has imposed a series of measures to prevent coronavirus spread, among them the closure of all schools, kindergartens and universities.

A special phone line <1135> had been in operation on 24/7 for questions about the pandemic as well as for those suspecting that they have contracted the virus.
