Top epidemiologist tells Greeks they need to go on diet during lockdown

Professor of Infectious Diseases and spokesman of the National Health Organization Sotiris Tsiodras advised Greeks on Easter Monday to follow a healthy diet now that they are in home isolation due to pandemic. A variety of vegetables and fruits, lean meat, seafood and fish are some of the dietary options Tsiodras recommenced a day after the whole nation consumed large quantities of unhealthy delicacies like roasted lamb, intestines, pies and dyed eggs, sweet Easter bread, cookies and pastries.                 . ”

“There is a national dietary guide for adults, based on the Greek traditional diet,” Tsiodras said during the coronavirus daily briefing and stunned the millions of Greeks who follow his live announcements with devotion. I am pretty sure that some TV viewers hastily let down a fork with baklava or ravani and others seriously thought to have just a salad for dinner.

“We should all pay attention to our diet and follow the Mediterranean diet since there is a unique opportunity in addition to the other difficulties we are going through, to improve our eating habits, as there is time to prepare homemade and healthy meals, to have the family gather around the table,” the professor said among others..

He advoted quite some time of the briefing to unfold the dietary instructions saying: “There is a famous national diet guide for adults, based on the traditional Greek diet, which is a version of the traditional Mediterranean diet that talks about a lot of water, a variety of vegetables and fruits, cereals, especially whole grains, low fat dairy products, limit the consumption of red meat and choose lean parts, seafood and fish, such as fatty fish and consumption of legumes, olive oil as the first choice, the restriction on the consumption of sugar, salt and products that contain them and, of course, our physical activity daily, in consultation with our doctor and maintaining a normal and stable body weight.”

Twitter used suggested that Tsiodras reads tweets where everybody posts about the increase of food consumption during the lockdown period that sums up in a month on April 23.

PS I’m sure during the briefing later today, Tsiodras will perform some work out exercises while grilling sardines at the same time. φρduring the briefing on Tuesday.

I really wonder who had the idea to have epidemiologist Tsiodras speak about “fatty fish, preferably the small ones that we prefer when eating fish.”
