Coronavirus Greece: Broader testing starts; 2,632 infections, 146 deaths

Two more deaths and six new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours have increased the coronavirus-related deaths to 146 and the number of total infections to 2,632, Greece’s health authorities announced on Monday.

35 patients are intubated in hospitals Intensive Care Units. Their average age is 67. of 67 years. Among thes epatients, 23% are women. 91.4% of ICU patients have underlying health issues and/or are over 70 years old.

81 COVID-19 patients have been discharged form the ICUs, so far.

Among the 146 dead were 39 women.

93.2% of the dead had underlying health issues and/or their average age was 70 years or more. The average age the deceased was 75.

A total of 80,951 tests have been conducted since the virus outbreak in late February.

The first 25 mobile medical units began carrying out diagnostic tests for Covid-19 on Monday, the day the lockdown started to ease and citizens need no longer a movement permit to leave their homes.

The mobile units are assigned to conduct tests to broader population and to those living in closed structures such as prisons or seniors’ facilities.

On Monday, tests have been conducted among others to workers of the seniors’ day center in Galatsi in Athens, also in Thessaloniki and Karditsa as well as in the prison of Domokos in central Greece.

A fleet of 500 mobile medical units will eventually span the entire country, after the hiring of 500 nurses, 500 drivers and 100 administrators.

The mobile units will also obtain samples and offer nursing assistance to home-bound people who are likely to or confirmed as having contracted the coronavirus.
