Greece weather: Floods, power outage and 6,700 lightning bolts

Torrential rains turned streets into rives and thousands of lightning bolts left households and business without power, when the bad weather front stroke Macedonia and Thrace in northern Greece. Fire brigades rescued a young man whose car was swept away from rushing waters.

Particularly hit by the severe weather phenomena were Halkidiki, Thessaloniki, Serres, Kilkis and Xanthi.

In Lagadas, a 21-year-old man lost control of his car was swept away by the rushing waters around Thursday midnight. His co-passenger managed to get out of the car. The passenger, also a young man, alerted the Fire Service that rushed to the spot with ten fire fighters with three vehicles. They rescued the driver, whose car was swept away some 30 meters and into a stream formed by the heavy rainfalls.

Both men were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

In the broader area of Thessaloniki, the Fire Service received over 100 calls to pump water from homes and basements and intervened in dozens of cases.

Halkidiki

Heavy rainfalls hit the Halkidiki peninsula and especially Nea Moudania and Kassandra, flooding houses and businesses, turning streets into rivers and yards into lakes.

The Lightning network system ZEUS operated by the National Observatory of Athens recorded 6,700 lighting bolts from morning to Thursday night. The highest density was in the Gulf of Thermaikos.

Weather service meteo forecasts that rainfalls will continue mostly on Crete and the weather phenomena will weaken by Friday night.

However, locally stormy winds up to 8 Beaufort are forecast in the Aegean Sea.
