With several days delay, the European Union finally reacted to the brutal murder of George Floyd in the USA and the excessive use of violence exercised by police against protesters. Through Joseph Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Brussels expressed “shock and appall” for the murder calling it “abuse of power.”
The statement is fine in its tone, hadn’t it be for this embarrassing statement by Borrell:
- “All lives matter, black lives also matter”
The European Union is “shocked and appalled” by the death of black American George Floyd in police custody, the bloc’s top diplomat said on Tuesday, calling it “an abuse of power” and warning against further excessive use of force.
“Like the people of the United States, we are shocked and appalled by the death of George Floyd … all societies must remain vigilant against the excessive use of force,” Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, told reporters.
Borrell called Floyd’s death a “very, very unhappy” one and said it showed “an abuse of power” by law enforcement. “We condemn racism of any kind … we trust in the ability of the Americans to come together, to heal as a nation”.
The arrest of Floyd, 46, was captured by an onlooker’s cellphone video that went viral and showed a police officerrestraining him while pressing his knee on Floyd’s neck as hemoaned: “Please, I can’t breathe.”
Borrell also said: “All lives matter, black lives also matter,” reuters reports.
