Greece’s Civil Protection announced on Friday a series of extraordinary restrictions including the mandatory use of mask in- and outdoors on the islands of Zakynthos and Lesvos. At the same time, it places the regional unit of Imathia, western Macedonia to regime of increased surveillance.
The strict restrictions aim to contain the spread of the coronavirus on these two islands. The restrictions for Zakynthos and Lesvos are similar to the ones imposed on other touristic destinations like Mykos, Paros and Halkidiki.
According to a statement by the Civil Protection the measures were decided based on the new epidemiological data on Lesvos and Zakynthos and in consultation with the country’s epidemiologists.
Restrictions for Zakynthos and Lesvos
-. Prohibition of operation of all catering sector facilities (restaurants, bars ect) from 12 midnight until 7 o’ clock next morning.
– Suspension of any kind of event such as live parties, trade fairs, religious processions, open markets etc..-
– Prohibition of any kind of gathering of citizens over 9 people for any reason, both in public and in private.
– In the dining areas a maximum number of people allowed at each table is 4. For the case of families and first degree relatives allowed are up to 6 people.
- Mandatory use of mask both outdoors and indoors.
It is noted that in consultation with the Ministry of Finance, affected businesses may suspend employment contracts.
The Civil Protection extends the same restrictions for Halkidiki, Mykonos, Paros and Antiparos
Restrictions for Imathia
-Suspension of operation of all catering sector facilities (restaurants, bars ect) from 12 midnight until 7 o’ clock next morning.
-Maximum number of people at 50 for all private and public events and gatherings with the exeption of facilities like restaurants, cinemas, theaters, where special rules apply.
It is recalled that in similar regime are the regions of Crete, East Macedonia and Threace, Attica, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Corfu, Karditsa, Pella and Pieria as well as the municipalities of Santorini, Rhodes, Volos and Kos, the Civil Protection said in its statement.
It is noted that in consultation with the Ministry of Finance, affected businesses may suspend employment contracts.
The restrictive measures are valid for 17 days from 06:00 am on 29. August 2020 until 06:00am Tuesday, 15. September 2020.
According to local authorities, the number of confirmed in infections on Lesvos reached 82 in the last few days.
Authorities on Zakynthos have been recently complaining about the lack of information on the side of the Health Ministry about the number of confirmed cases. Local newspaper imerazante noted on Friday, that the confirmed cases are daily and that infections are detected among locals and tourists on a daily basis.
