Earthquake rattles Athens and Attica with 4.4 R

An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale rattled Athens and the Prefecture of Attica on Thursday afternoon. The earthquake occurred a few minutes after 6 o’ clock local time and its epicenter was located between Marathon and Rafina, some 29 km North-East from the Greek capital and 17 km north of Rafina in East Attica.

The tremor was of short duration but strong. The focal depth was reportedly just 6.8 km and that’s why it was felt throughout the prefecture.

There have been no reports on injuries or material damage, especially in East Attica where the epicenter was.

Head of Earthquake Protection and Planning Efthimios Lekkas told media that the earthquake occurred on the fault line of Marathon. He appeared reassuring that no bigger tremor is expected. He said, though, that several smaller aftershocks are due.
