Police arrests suspect for bomb that triggered deadly shootout in Vorizia

Police on the island of Crete arrested a 23-year-old man on Wednesday. He is believed to be behind the bomb attack on a house of Fragkiadakis family in Vorizia that triggered the deadly shootout with two dead and four injured on November 1, 2025.

The man is the nephew of the 39-year-old Fanouris Kargakis who was killed in the clash in Vorizia village.

According to police, investigation evaluated video footage which led to the identification of the suspect. He was reportedly seen to take something out of his car trunk. Police suspects also that the young man has made the bomb himself and brought it to explosion later to the house under construction.

Investigation continues to find out who gave the order for the bomb.

One of the rival families had objection to the construction claiming that the plot was in the village area that belonged to the family.

The arrestee, his family and his lawyer deny the charges reportedly claiming that the man was at a wedding in another village when the explosion occurred. The lawyer cites also testimonies of the Fragkiadakis family that they had seen him at the wedding in Heraklio,

The man was located on Wednesday afternoon by police officers in Vorizia and arrested.

Meanwhile, police still tries to convince the members of the two families to hand out the weapons used in the shootout as investigators have not found them, so far.

It is questionable whether the shootout was a vendetta – a honor killing in revenge for another killing – to between the Fragkiadakis and the Kargakis families as several members have been married to each other, have children and grandchildren and nephews and nieces and have been living in the same village for decades.

There is strong suspicion that it was just a feud between the two families struggling for power in the area.

So far, investigation has turned out to be difficult as members of the families but also other residents of Vorizia are afraid to speak to investigators fearing retaliation.
