Police arrested 30 people at the controlled Temporary Housing Facility for Asylum Applicants at Sintiki of the Serres area in northern Greece on Wednesday, following riots caused by groups of young foreigners.
According to local media, the incidents broke out after the rejection of asylum applications submitted by guests of the facility.
Tension broke out after midday, initially as a protest on issues of asylum and the living conditions at the facility.
Those who had gathered outside the housing facilities set clothes on fire and started throwing rocks at police officers who had arrived at the area, and they moved toward the enclosure fence, threatening to escape.
A large police force arrived outside the facility and prevented them from doing so, while the Fire Department put the fire out before it spread further.
Dozens of people were rounded up for questioning to determine the instigators, while the migrants housed at the facility were recounted. An hour later the situation was calmer, and police said it arrested a total of 30 people for causing the incidents (for incitement to commit crimes, attempted escape, and insubordination).
Three police officers were lightly hurt, one of them from a stone hitting him on the leg.
The facility is at the Promachonas region, in the location called Kleidi.
