Greece records 169 new coronavirus cases; deaths reach 290

Greece recorded 169 new confirmed coronavirus cases and 1 more death in the last 24 hours, health authorities announced on Tuesday evening. Total cases have reached 11,832 and deaths 290.

The latest fatality is a 49-year-old man hospitalized in Thessaloniki since August 1. The man had underlying health issues.

During the live briefing on Tuesday, authorities said that the active cases in the country are at 3,978.

Professor for Hygiene and Epidemiology and spokesman of the Health Ministry, Gkikas Majiorkinis said on Tuesday, that there has been a smooth decrease of new infections in the last days, while intubations record a smooth increase.

Of the new cases in the last 24 hours,  16 were detected among tourists.

There have been 1,066 infections in 5 days and 10 deaths in the time Sept 4-7.

According to the official daily bulletin on Tuesday, 2274 (19.2%) of the total cases are related to travel abroad and 5204(44%) are related to already known infection case.

55.8% of the infected are men.

The number of intubated patients in ICUs remains at 42. Their average age is 69, among them are 10 women. 88.1% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.

164 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.

One more death in the last 24 hours increased the death toll to 290.  Of the deceased 107 were women. The average age of the deceased was 78 and 96.2% of the deceased had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.

Rolling weekly average cases at 190 from 221 last week. Below 200 was also before August 15.

Total tests since begin of outbreak are 1,050,259.

Tests in the last 24 hours: 12,423 with 1.36% of them positive.

Of the 169 new coronavirus cases, 153 are domestic, of them 8 are linked to recent travel within the country and 27 to known clusters.

15 of the new cases were detected at entry points  -and another 1 traveler sought laboratories after they developed symptoms.

The remaining cases are:

65 in Attica

23 in Lesvos

9 in Thessaloniki, 8 in Larissa, 7 in Pieria

Each 6 in Pella, Imathia

Each 3 Fthiotida, Ioannina, Heraklio

Each 1 in Chios, Tinos, Xanthi, Mykonos, Lefkada, Lakonia, Santorini, Evia, Grevena, Corfu.
* it is since yesterday that authorities refer to specific islands and not in the Regional units they belong to. Most probably, Greek authorities decided to more transparency after two European countries imposed quarantine to travellers from Greek islands.

Confirmed coronavirus cases among refugees and asylum-seekers at the Moria have increased to 35 on Tuesday afternoon.

According to media, 35-40 workers in a can factory in Giannitsa, Pella Prefecture, West Macedonia, have been tested positive. In a statement the company said the confirmed cases were 11. They will most probably added to the official data on Wednesday. The seasonal workers told media that they are transferred by buses to the factory also from regions nearby as well as from Thessaloniki and Kilkis. Health teams have started to track the contacts of the infected.

In Trikala, staff in 3 schools, including a nursery, were tested positive.

Also in a nursery school in Korydalos, suburb of western Athens, was tested positive and so did also a parent of a toddler attending a nursing school in Mochato.

Six cases have been confirmed in the refugees and asylum-seekers accommodation structures in Elaionas, Schisto and Malakasa that have been placed in quarantine.
