Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sounded alarm over the spread of the coronavirus in Attica, especially in districts and suburbs of Athens and announced that additional restrictive measures are due.
“The government is prepared to impose additional measures to contain the spread of coronavirus in Attica,” the prime minister said after a meeting with the country’s top epidemiologists who recommenced even tighter restrictions than the ones imposed since September 16.
Mitsotakis said that the measures will affect among others public gatherings and social events, suspension of cultural events for 14 days and measures that encourage teleworking in the public and private sector, in order to restrict unnecessary movements.
He underlined that the government must make sure that the tighter restrictions are realistic in their application, sufficiently and convincingly explained and such without a “deeper economic impact.”
The prime minister urged vulnerable members of the society to exercise increased caution.
Citing government sources, media report that there will be “additional control measures, especially for vulnerable groups at local level”, that ismunicipalities and districts of Athens.
Greece’s top epidemiologist, Professor for Infectious Diseases Sotiris Tsiodras said that Attica is in “Orange Category.”
According to newspaper ethnos,the big problem of virus infections is recorded in the Municipalities of Athens, Piraeus, Kifissia and Peristeri, suburb of western Athens.
With 9 deaths within 24 hours, health authorities announced on Thursday a record number of Covid-19 related deaths. Even if not all of the deceased were in Attica, though, but the number shocked.
Three more people died within a few hours on Friday, raising the death toll at 328.
Attica has a constant three-digit number of coronavirus infections on daily basis. The Reigonla Unit is home to some 5 million people.
The additional measures are expected to be announced during the live briefing at 6 pm Friday and go into force as of Monday, 21. September 2020, and for 14 days.
