Medicane floods villages, highway in Central Greece, dozens trapped (videos)

With violent and intense force, Medicane Ianos struck the region of Fthiotida in central Greece on Friday noon and flooded homes, businesses and roads, including the part of the national highway between Lamia and Karpenissi.

Villages west of the city of Lamia received tons of water for over three hours.

Torrential rainfalls and over-flooded streams swept away pens and water boreholes.

Dozens of people have been trapped in flooded houses, so far over 35 were rescued by the Fire Service, mostly elderly, vulnerable groups and some with mobility problems.

Pupils from a school in  Loutra Ypatis had to be evacuated with Fire Service trucks.

Local media lianikladinews reported that the deputy mayor of Lianokladi transferred a resident to safety with a municipality digger.

The part of the national highway between Lianokladi and Makri has turned into a huge river, and several motorists are trapped in their vehicles, local media reported.

According to Alpha TV, there is extensive damage in Lianokladi, when a river flooded and a bridge collapsed.

There are no reports about injuries or fatalities.

The area was not even supposed to be on the path of Medicane Ianos.
