US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Greece next weekend, September 27-28, media report on Sunday. The visit is of high political importance due to the developments in the Greek-Turkish relations.
Pompeo will reportedly speak at a conference in Thessaloniki. On Sunday, he will visit the Naval base of Souda on the island of Crete and there he will have meetings with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias.
Some media report that the visit of the US top diplomat reflects Washington’s desire to de-escalate tensions in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
Next to the Greek-Turkish relations, Pompeo will discuss military cooperation between US and Greece.
Pompeo’s visit will take place after the EU Summit on September 24-25, where Turkey and possible sanctions against it will top the agenda.
Last week the Secretary of State visited Cyprus, where he made statements in favor of dialogue among parties involved in east Mediterranean tensions.
