The Greek Parliament is considering to freeze the ratification of the “memorandum of cooperation” with Azerbaijan due to the war in Nagorno-Karabakh,
According the Greek media, the “memorandum of cooperation” was to be submitted to the relevant Committee on Tuesday.
The Memorandum of Understanding between Greece and Azerbaijan aiming to promote cooperation in the fields of Sports and Friendship, along with thee more are scheduled to be submitted to the Committee of Educational Affairs
In the Greek parliament, however, the war in Nagorno-Karabakh has reportedly caused a negative atmosphere against Azerbaijan. “At the moment, the government realizes that it would be at least politically inappropriate to promote fo ratification a memorandum of cooperation with Azerbaijan,” writes newspaper real.gr.
The parliamentary representative of nationalist Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution,) Costas Hitas, spoke of an attack by Azerbaijan “on our Armenian brothers” and called on the government to withdraw the Memorandum.
Deputy Parliament Speaker, Nikitas Kaklamanis (New Democracy) said it is the Speaker of the Parliament to decide after consultation with the government.
“However, I can take a position and my position is clearly in favor of the Armenians,” Kaklamanis reportedly said.
Since Monday morning, the Parliament has been in contact with the Prime Minister’s office, the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture & Sports in order to find a solution. Freezing of the promotion of the Memorandum seems as the most probable version, notes real.gr.
Greece and Armenia have historic bonds not only for sharing the same religion but because both folks suffered from the Ottoman Empire and the modern Turkey.
