Head of “Greece 2021” committee, Giana Angelopoulou-Daskalaki, has invited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to attend the celebrations marking 200 years from the Greek Revolution against the Ottomans in 1821.
As daily kathimerini revealed the invitation was forwarded to Erdogan via “channels” and after consultation with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
So far, the plan seems to have failed as Ankara’s response was not a warm one.
Of course, such an invitation raises many questions about the purpose of the presence of Erdogan at such an event, especially as he has increased provocations against Greece, challenging the sovereignty of the country.
On the other hand, the initiators of the invitation may hope that thorn issues between the two countries may have been settled by 25. March 2021, when the major event is scheduled to take place – should the Covid-19 pandemic allow it.
Official starting point of the “Greece 2021 celebrations is the 25. March 2021 with the participations of the head sof states that fought in the Battle of Navarino – Britain, France, Russia – and secured the establishment of the Greek state – Britain, France and Russia.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Monday during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergej Lavrov that he had extended a personal invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron and Prince Charles as representative of Queen Elizabeth to attend the events as representatives of three countries that played a decisive role in the Greek War of Independence.
PS And among them, Erdogan the defeated? Hardly…
A very nice gesture! I hope Mr. Erdogan will surprise me and attend! But before that happens it will be seven mondays in a week…..
And mrs e in her top-to-toe unfeminine white sheets amongst the glamorous Greek women. Can’t wait to see the videos on the big screen. Naughty Greeks have such a marvelously droll sense of humor! Melina always on Sunday and Zorba still live!
