Earthquake 6.7R elevates the island of Samos 18-25 cm

The island of Samos has been elevated 18-25 cm after the strong earthquake that hit with 6.7 on the Richter scale on Friday, October 30, 2020, Greek scientists said. The epicenter was 16 km North-NorthWest form the island in the eastern Aegean Sea close to the Turkish coast.

According to an announcement by a research team from the School of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the spectaculat elevation was observed both in the northern and southern parts of the island.

Member of the research team, seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos said that because of this elevation the island was not hit by a bigger tsunami.

The team has carried out a thorough study of the Samos earthquake, its impact on the island’s buildings, the accompanying geodynamic phenomena, the tsunami that followed and the distortion of land formations.

From the total observations carried out in situ, it is indicated that the permanent elevation of the island is between 18 to 25 cm.

The Samos earthquake killed two teenager students the island, was felt throughout Greece and nearby Turkey, where it caused extensive damage and brought down several buildings in the city of Izmir, killing 113 people and injuring over a thousand others.

Participants in the research team are Professor Efthymis Lekkas, Dr. Spyridon Mavroulis, Dr. Marilia Gogou and Dr. Ioanna Triantafyllou, with the participation of seismologist Dr. Gerasimos Papadopoulos.
