Bishop of Langadas, Ioannis, dies after infection with Covid-19

The Bishop of Langadas. Litis and Retinis, Ioannis died on Sunday after contracting Covid-19. The 62-year-old clergyman was hospitalized in Papanikolaou hospital in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, since last Friday.

According to a statement issued by the hospital, Bishop Ioannis was tested positive to virus SARS-CoV-2 on Friday and was hospitalized in the Covid-19 section of Papanikolaou hospital.

“His health condition deteriorated, he developed pneumological infection and passed away at 6:30 pm on Sunday due to cardiopulmonary arrest.”

The Bishop whose name was Ioannis Tassias had underlying health issues, the hospital said.

Also on Sunday, websites dealing with church and religious news reported that the Bishop of Veria in western Macedonia, Panteleimon, was tested positive to Covid-19 and was reportedly in self-isolation. A few hours later, the 75-year-old Panteleimon dismissed the reports saying that he was perfectly healthy.

New website libre, notes that there seem to be a domino effect of infections after the festive religious ceremony  in Thessaloniki to honor the patron of the city Saint Demetrius on October 26, where several bishops participated without the necessary protection measures and without face masks.

A few days later, on Nov 4-5, the same Bishops participated in the meetings of the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church. Some of them “spread the virus with the effect that the Bishop of Kalavryta and other became ill. Among them was also the Bishop of Langadas,” the website notes.

  1. So the virus doesn’t discriminate! And this bishop probably encouraged his worshipers to all drink out of the same chalice during communion and leave off their masks while in the church. Incompetence and irresponsibility are not the government’s monopoly, after all.
