Greece develops its first locally produced Rapid Antigen Test

The Greek Development Ministry announced on Monday the first locally produced rapid antigen test for Covid-19. The test is the result of cooperation between six research centers and four universities.

The Ministry hailed the development of the rapid test as “major success.”

Participated in the research are scientists from the universities of:
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical Department
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Medical Department
The University of Crete Medical Department
The University of Ioannina

and form research centers:
The Institute of Biomedical Research of the Academy of Athens
The National Center for Research and Technological Development Institute of Applied Life Sciences
The Hellenic Pasteur Institute
The Institute “Amalia Fleming”
The Institute of Technology and Research
The NCSR “Demokritos”

A part of a 2.9-million-euro research program was unded by the Development Ministry.

The scientists involved in the development of the rapid test have applied for the patent from the Industrial Property Organization.

Search for the company that will produce the testing kit is under way, the ministry said.

The program “puts Greece at the forefront of developments in the study of the virus and the production of knowledge for dealing with this health crisis,” the Ministry said.

It added that the rapid antigen test will improve the ability of Greek health authorities to carry out testing for the novel coronavirus on a mass scale.
