Fines on 9 women activists have been erased, says Greek Police

The fines imposed on nine women activists arrested on November 25 have been erased, Deputy Citizens’ Protection Minister Lefteris Oikonomou said on Friday.

The women were detained for “violating the public health protection measures” when they gathered in front of the Palriament in downtown Athens to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Police forces were deployed and detained them although the activists were wearing masks, keept social distancing and the group was within the limits according to the lockdown rules.

Objections were filed against the fines, which were accepted, resulting in their cancellation, said Ikonomou, in response to a question in Parliament by a SYRIZA lawmaker.

The Minister for Civil Protection had apologized two days after the arrest, however, the fines were not immediately erased.
