Thessaloniki in Christmas mood amid the pandemic (video)

Loaded with 9,000 lights and framed with 1,500 lamps the Christmas tree was placed in Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki. The lights were officially lit on Tuesday night and will send the message of optimism to the residents of the city most hit by the pandemic.

The lighting of the 13-meter tall Christmas tree at 6 o’ clock in the afternoon in the most central part of the city took place in a very modest ceremony without music, songs and happenings, wihtout the presence of joyful people.

This year, the decoration is brighter and richer yet it illuminates an empty city that is in the sixth week of lockdown and night curfew. A city that mourns hundreds of dead, and thousands without current work…

The Municipality tired through the thousands of lights to change the mood and bring a glimpse of hope

The lighting of the Christmas tree, located in the center of the square, is special, since a specific program was created on the spot for its management (lighting show).

A second tree, 16 meters tall, has been placed in the corner of Aristotelous Square, the Nativity scene is also there.

Due to the pandemic, the municipality of Thessaloniki proceeded to decorate the city’s hospitals.

Indicatively, a ten meter high tree was placed in the AHEPA hospital, which was symbolically illuminated by the mayor, Konstantinos Zervas, last week.

Emphasis was also given to the lighting of the neighborhoods where Christmas trees and nativity scenes were placed as well.

Apart from the municipality of Thessaloniki, the other municipalities of the urban complex also “wore” their holiday clothes from an early age.

Trees in the squares and town halls, decorated streets compose the scene of a city that continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
