Primary schools, kindergartens open on Jan 11, secondary education later

Greece’s Education Ministry announced on Monday evening the opening of primary schools and kindergartens on Monday, January 11  Secondary education schools will open at a later date depending on epidemiological data. Announcements for cuts of curriculum for the 3. grade of Lyceum are due later in the week. Options for teachers to undergo rapid tests.

No online-education for elementary school pupils and kindergarten-children on Friday, Jan 8, as teachers will have to return to schools.

Distance-education for gymnasiums and lyceums starts on Friday, Jan 8.

Additional preventive measures for teachers: a special platform has already been launched through which teachers will be able to request a free Covid-19 test. This measure is voluntary for teachers and of a purely preventive nature regarding the epidemiological picture in schools.

The committee of experts advising the government on the coronavirus had proposed earlier on Monday the reopening of kindergartens and elementary schools on Jan11, when the current seven-day strict lockdown expires.

The reopening of secondary education – gymnasiums and lyceums – could follow a week later when epidemiologists and health experts will evaluate the epidemiological data at the end of the week, media report.

There are reportedly thoughts that primary schools and kindergartens implement a staggered schedule of arrival and departure of children in order to avoid overcrowding of parents and guardians when they bring their children or take them back.
This has been confirmed by the Education Ministry statement that spoke of “differentiated arrival and departure times per group of departments where this is possible and necessary with the exception of cases of mass transfer of students.
Schools will open again with all safety and protection measure,s including the wearing of masks, the ministry underlined.
On Sunday, the government spokesman had announced the opening of all education levels on Jan 11 and so he justified the one-week-long stricter lockdown.
A day later, epidemiologists disagreed with the broader opening of educational facilities.
Primary schools and kindergartens closed mid-November 2020, secondary education a week earlier, when the second lockdoown was imposed.
