Vaccination of health workers starts as more hospitals added on program

Dozens more hospitals across Greece have been receiving batches of the Covid-19 vaccines on Monday. in a vaccination program scheduled to be completed in three phases. 42 more hospitals are being added to the nine hospitals that already carry out vaccinations since the end of 2020.

First vaccines arrived at the hospital of Corinth on Sunday.

Aim of the government is to reach 5,000 vaccinations per day.

55 mainland hospitals will be added by January 8 and another 19 island hospitals by January 12.

Military hospitals will be gradually added to the hospitals of the national health system included in the program.

The vaccination of health workers in private health sector is also expected to begin.

Also starting today, Monday, is the vaccination of those living and working in nursing homes. The vaccination of this group will be completed by January 20.

Health workers are first in line for the vaccines, followed by people who work in care homes, shelters and other state-run accommodation facilities, then individuals with chronic illnesses that make them particularly vulnerable to the novel coronavirus, the elderly, etc.

The government aims to ensure that more than 100,000 people have been immunized against Covid-19 by January 20.

Over the weekend,  a major issue arose when mass vaccinations for health workers in public hospitals scheduled for Monday was canceled. It turns out that this had rather to do with bad management and information on the side of the Health Ministry than with “indefinite postponement.”
