Greece’s “green” areas on EU ECDC coronavirus map

Greece is the only country in European Union, next to Finland, that has several regions marked with “green” on the latest map issued by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) charting the spread of the coronavirus. Finland has just one region.

Epirus in northwestern Greece, the Ionian Islands and the Cyclades and the majority of the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea are currently the only green areas in Europe.

In contrast, red is the prevalent color across most of Europe, which indicates 150 confirmed cases of the coronavirus per 100,000 population. At the same time, most of Greece, Finland and Iceland are marked “orange.”

  • green if the 14-day notification rate is lower than 25 cases per 100 000 and the test positivity rate below 4%;
  • orange if the 14-day notification rate is lower than 50 cases per 100 000 but the test positivity rate is 4% or higher or, if the 14-day notification rate is between 25 and 150 cases per 100 000 and the test positivity rate is below 4%;
  • red if the 14-day notification rate is 50 cases per 100 000 or higher and the test positivity rate is 4% or higher or if the 14-day notification rate is higher than 150 cases per 100 000;
  • grey if there is insufficient information or if the testing rate is lower than 300 cases per 100 000.

The ECDC does not collect data on the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the Balkan countries (excluding those belonging to the EU), Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

The ECDC maps are updated every Thursday.

  1. I think that, on the maps, Crete is being presented as as single unit not the 4 regions. If you look at the map that just shows positivity, the whole of Greece is green which means less than 4 % positivity. If you then look at the map showing both positivity and 14 day notification rate per 100,000 population the whole of Crete is orange, which means either 25 to 49 cases or 50 to 149 cases. It is true that if you look at the total rate for the whole of Crete it is currently around 30 so the map is correct. If you look at the 4 regions, however, Chania, Rethymnon and Lasithi are all over 25 but Heraklion is well under 25 at around 15.
