858 new coronavirus cases worry Greece’s authorities, 32 more deaths

For second consecutive day new coronavirus cases exceeded 800, an increase that has health authorities worried. On Wednesday evening, announced have been 858 new cases and 32 deaths in 24 hours. The number of Covid-19 patients intubated in hospitals across the country has decreased further to 274.

Death toll has reached 5,724 and the total cases stand at 154,083.

Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias said that several regional units are a cause of concern.

Regions with increasing number of infections are:

  • Thira[Santorini], Mykonos, Viotia, Rodopi, West Attica, Lakonia.

Regions with the most new infections and increasing trend are:

  • Magnisia, Evia, Achaia, Attica (mainly North, East and Central)

Kikilias stated that the median number of daily cases in the last 7 days is 547 and the media age of infected 48.

Epidemiological data show an infections increase compared to last week something that could be linked to the opening of retail( Jan 21).

Regarding the active cases, Kikilias said that there are estimated to be 5,324 across the country. 2,374 of them are in Attica and 951 in Central Macedonia.

According to the official daily bulletin 5803(3.8%) of the total coronavirus cases are related to travel abroad and 47802(62.8%) are related to already known infection case.

The remaining infections are without known source.

52.1% of the infected are men.

The number of intubated patients in ICUs stands at 274 from 283 a day earlier. Their average age is 69, among them are 194(70.8%) men. 86.9% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.

1,090 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.

Another 32 deaths in the last 24 hours increased death toll to 5724. Of the deceased 3367(58.8%) were men. The average age of the deceased was 79 and 95.4% of them had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.

Rolling weekly average cases at 596 from 480 last week.

Total tests since 1. Jan 2020 are 3,071,337 PCR and 985,492 Rapid Ag tests

Of the 858 new coronavirus cases, 11 were detected at the country’s entry points.

11 of the new cases were detected at entry points, plus 7 more travelers were already in the country.
