Gov’t believes Greece can achieve “wall of immunity” by autumn

The Greek government seems confident to have created a “wall of immunity” within the autumn, in the sense than seven million citizens that are either vaccinated or have naturally acquired immunity to Covid-19.

In an article in newspaper ta nea, state minister Akis Skertsos rejected arguments that the measures announced by the government seek to “punish” the unvaccinated citizens, saying that their aim was to protect public health.

He underlined that the prospect of horizontal measures against the pandemic was out of the question and urged those hesitating to be vaccinated to make haste and do so.

“If we had managed to vaccinate the entire population of the country, we would now have just 50 cases intubated in hospitals throughout the country instead of 332. We would, in other words, have converted the pandemic into a severe flu that primarily poses a threat to those suffering from other underlying diseases and that does not have an unbearably high cost in human lives nor overburdens the health system,” Skertsos added.

The minister, journalist and lobbying by profession and a wannabe-professional-of-medicine-and-epidemiology by aspiration obviously considers the pandemic virus a static “bug” that has to infect only people with underlying health problems and never wondered why the same government of which he is part of is preparing booster shots.

Initially the Greek government was planning to have reached a wall of immunity  with some 65%-70% of the population vaccinated by August. However, a large percentage of Greeks showed reluctance to get a shot for various reasons with the effect that only 54.8% are fully vaccinated on August 28 and less than 300,000 people having received one jab only.

  1. “Some 65%-70% of the population vaccinated” no longer provides herd immunity because the reproducibility of the Delta variant is much higher. That was the level needed when the original European variant was dominant. I think it is now impossible to achieve herd immunity but it is still worth pursuing a very high level of vaccination as it will slow down the spread, reduce the number of people who need hospitalising and reduce deaths.

  2. I thought the Greek Government believed thet they would build their wall of immunity when everyone (espepcially on the tourist island) when everyone was vaccinated byther END OF JUNE.

Haev ethat identified the Autumn of any specific year ?

  3. It would be great if we could join the herd, but despite getting a temp number on the 12 July it is not possible to get an appointment for a vaccination, 75 years old.but not on current platform! What stupid person decided that!
