Teachers to launch 24h strike to protest “mandatory evaluation” by Education Ministry

The Federation of Greek Primary Teachers (DOE) will launch a 24-hour strike for Monday, October 11, against the mandatory evaluation of teaching staff and schools. The teacher’s strike is a response to Education Ministry sought the court to cancel any planned strike. The court ruled that theachers’ strike were “illegal” and the DOE appealed to a higher instance.

In a statement on Wednesday, DOE slammed the policy of mandatory evaluation as “anti-pedagogical,” adding that it will have a “disastrous effect on public schools.”

On social media posts, several teachers said that the “mandatory evaluation” has little to do with their teaching performance as such but also their skills to “upgrade” the school or even get donors..

According to the Education Ministry, the teachers’ evaluation will not be punitive and under-perfoming teachers will not be dismissed from service but advised to attend seminars to improve their skills.

Teachers assessments were ended in Greece in 1982 when socialist PASOK was in power.
