Greece’s health authorities announced on Thursday 6,801 coronavirus cases and 69 Covid-related deaths in the past 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospitals has surpassed 500 and increased to 503.
As ICUs capacities have been reached in many hospitals outside Athens, non-Covid patients have difficulties to received the proper medical aid. In Volos, a young vicitm of a traffic accident had to wait for 17 hours for an ICU bed. He was intubated withheavy head injuries outside the ICU.
At the weekly Live Briefing on the course of the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday, health authorities pointed out at the big spread of the pandemic in the country, stressing that infections increased by 50% in the last week.
Average age of the new cases is 36.
Active coronavirus cases exceed 47,000 across the country, while 1 in 4 cases is detected in Attica.
Active cases in Thessaloniki exceed 7,500 and in Larissa 3,379.

There is an increase of Covid-tests, with approximately 2% of the population to be tested daily.
The rolling average of positivity is 2.2%.
3,000 Covid-patients are hospitalized and therefore it is expected to see an increase of intubated patients.
Alternate Health Minister Mina Gaga spoke of a “dramatic situation” at Greece’s public hospitals, while hospitalizations in ICUs increase the oxygen needs with the tanks emptying in zero time.
Oxygen tanks empty within a single day instead of in one or two weeks,” Gaga said [but she did not disclose why the government did not do much to shield the public hospitals in advance, when everybody was seeing the fourth wave of the pandemic coming already in mid-October].

67 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, brought the total of pandemic victims to 16,560. Of these, 95.3% had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.
503 Covid-patients are on ventilators in hospitals from 489 a day earlier.. Their median age is 65 years, 58.5% are men. 82.7% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or over.
Of the total patients on intubation, 416 (82.7%) are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated and 87 (17.3%) are fully vaccinated.

3,387 have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.
413 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospitals in the last 24 hours (daily change: +0.47%). The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 395.
The median age of new infections is 38 years (range: 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of the deceased is 78 (range: 0.2 to 106 years).

I think some of the figures quoted for regions have not been updated from yesterday, e.g. the four regions of Crete are identical to yesterday. Other sources have different numbers. I haven’t checked all the regions.
