6,950 coronavirus cases, 72 deaths, 551 intubations; distribution in Greece

Greece’s health authorities announced on Monday 6,950 coronavirus cases and 72 Covid-related deaths in the past 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospitals has increased further to 551.

Note that tests in past 24 hours are much fewer than working days due to the weekend.

As pressure on public hospitals remains high, the Greek government is to send requisition documents to private doctors who have not voluntarily registered to help with the pandemic. The Health ministry is to review the number of registrations and move accordingly tonight or tomorrow morning.

Media reported earlier on Monday that some over 20 doctors have registered but that health care system would need over 100.

At the Live Briefing on Monday, the president of the National Vaccination Committee, Maria Theodoridou, said that also those who have been fully vaccinated and fell ill before or afterwards with Covid-19 will need a booster shot. More details about the time when the group that contracted Covid-19 after vaccination will receive the booster shot are to be announced soon.

She added that hundreds of vaccinated citizens are ill with Covid, however with mild symptoms.

“However, 10%-15% of vaccinated elderly with underlying health issues can fell serious ill with Covid.,” she stressed.

Thedoridou said that it looks as if vaccination against Covid-19 will be: 3 jabs plus 1 booster shot each year.

  1. “Thedoridou said that it looks as if vaccination against Covid-19 will be: 3 jabs plus 1 booster shot each year.”

I think it is too early to make this sort of prediction. It may be correct or it may not. We need time after a large number have received the third dose to monitor what happens and then make a decision. The countries that are most advanced with vaccination, e.g. Israel, don’t have that information yet. The information they have so far is that a third dose does boost immunity to symptomatic disease, hospitalisation and death quite massively even compared to that provided by 2 doses so is very valuable.
