7,108 coronavirus cases, 93 deaths, 612 intubations; distribution in Greece

Greece’s health authorities announced on Wednesday 7,108 new coronavirus cases and  93 Covid-relared deaths in the past 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospitals has increased again further to 612.

Two Covid-deniers infected with coronavirus died in their homes in Larissa, central Greece, after they refused to go to hospital and receive medical care. One of them, a 64-year-old man was found dead in the elevator of the multi-storey building. His sister, 60, also infected with the virus, said that he went to seek help. She ultimately agreed to be transferred to a hospital.

The second victim was a 60-year-old man who had also refused to go to the hospital.

Among today’s deaths is also a high-ranking priest, 46, as well as a 41-year-old cardiologist. Both men had refused to be vaccinated against the virus.

The cardiologist, father of a new born and one toddler, was suspended due to his vaccination-refusal and had also closed down his medical office.

The priest infected his parents who are now hospitalized in northern Greece.

  1. It’s disturbing how the number of fully vaccinated in the ICU keeps creeping up!

I also find it interesting how so many of the deaths in the middle range (30-60), without underlying health issues, tends to be men. In fact, every one I know in this age range who has died from Covid were male. It would be interesting to see the data on this.

    • Across all age ranges approximately twice as many men die of COVID as women. Perhaps one gender inequality that women are grateful for?

The percentage of people who die in any age range increases in a log-linear fashion at a rate of about 0.59% per 5 year increase above 10 years, i.e. below 10 it is almost 0%, 10 to 15 it is about 0.59%, 15 to 20 it is about 1.18% and so on. That is a best fit based on studies from many countries.

It is a mathematical inevitability that as more people become vaccinated the percentage of vaccinated people in ICU will increase. It doesn’t mean vaccinated people are more likely to need ICU just that there are far more of them. It is true that the number will increase gradually as immunity declines over time unless people get the booster dose. That might account for some of the increase as boosters seem to be rolling out fairly slowly, the oldest have had their second dose the longest and the oldest are the most vulnerable.
