First Omicron variant case confirmed in Greece; patient traveled from S, Africa to Crete

The first case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 has been detected and confirm in Greece, Health Minister Thanos Plevris announced on Thursday morning. According to the Health Minister, the infected “zero patient” is a Greek citizen, who arrived from South Africa to Athens and from there he traveled to Crete.

The patient is in quarantine in Chania together with his contacts who were traced after the laboratory confirmation of the Omicron variant.

The young man is reportedly a permanent resident of Johannesburg to traveled to Crete to spend Christmas with his parents.

According to state broadcaster ERT, the man is fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and had undergone a PCR test (negative) before his departure.

Head of the National Organization for Public Health (EODY), Theoklis Zaoutis said the man flew to Crete on November 26 and took a rapid antigen test at the airport which turned up negative.

A second test the next day, after he developed mild symptoms of Covid-19, again received a negative result until a third test on November 29 confirmed the infection.

Upon his arrival in Athens International Airport on November 26,  he had to undergo a Rapid test. It was negative.  In the following days, he developed coronavirus symptom and on November 29 he had a PCR test that was positive. As the case was considered as “suspect” the sample was sent to Heraklio hospital laboratory for the further analysis. The lab confirmed that it was the Omicron variant.

Alerted by the new variant, authorities tracked and traced the patient’s contacts and they were all placed in quarantine.

A high-ranking official of the health authorities told local media zarpanews, that the patient is isolated in his home and has mild symptoms.

His contacts have been tested “negative”, so far.

Meanwhile, media report that the infected patient is a 60-year-old businessman.

Greece imposed travel restrictions to travelers from South Africa and another 8 of its neighboring countries on November 26, however, Greeks are allowed to return to the country.

Note that there are no direct flights between Greece and South Africa.

the Omicron variant has been reportedly detected in 24 countries, so far.
