Mother arrested in Crete for keeping child out of school over Covid-19 concerns

A 39-year-old woman in Heraklio, Crete, was arrested on Monday for keeping her child out of school for two years over coronavirus concerns.

The woman was arrested following a public prosecutor’s order and she could face charges of child neglect

The 9-year-old pupil has not attended classes since September 2020.

Together with other parents who also kept their children out of school, the mother had been summoned by the Prosecutor’s Office to the Heraklion courthouse in the previous days.

According to local media cretapost, the parents did not allow their children to attend school either because of their opposition to government measures to deal with the pandemic, or citing the protection of their children. from the coronavirus, or because they deny the existence of the virus.

The prosecutor has reportedly urged the mother to send her son back to school adding that this would be counted to her favor  during the trial scheduled to take place in upcoming Friday.

The mother could lose custody of the child.
