Greece on Monday closed its airspace for all Russian aircraft in line with a European Union decision, the country’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said in an air directive issued in the morning. The flight ban goes in effect from Monday, February 20, 2022 and will apply for three months.

Only humanitarian and emergency flights will be allowed.

The aviation directive for the prohibition of the use of the national airspace of Greece by Russian air carriers is applied after the decision of the European Union to close its airspace for the Russian Federation.

In particular, the notam provides the following:

Aircraft of Russian ownership, Russian Airlines (AOC) or of Russian control, including private jets, are prohibited from landing, taking off, entering and passing through Greek national airspace.

– The aviation directive excludes flights of humanitarian interest, hospital flights and flights for search and rescue purposes with the approval of the Greek government as well as all emergency flights.

– The notam will have a duration of three months and is valid from today, Monday 28 February.

Sunday night, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the EU shuts down its airspace for Russian-owned, Russian registered or Russian-controlled aircraft including oligarchs’ private jets.

Several EU and non-EU countries started closing their airspace for Russian aircraft and Moscow had responded with counter sanctions banning these countries to fly there. See details here.
