Explosive device found outside the Courts compound in downtown Athens

A backpack with explosives was found close to the premises of the Courts compound in downtown Athens late on Sunday. A warning to two media outlets alerted police.

Authorities were alerted late Sunday night when shortly before midnight, an unknown person called a news website and a newspaper and warned of a bomb being planted in the Courts compound. The bomb would explode in 25 minutes, the caller warned further.

Strong police forces rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area, while a team from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department (T.E.E.M.) carried out a check.

Citing information from the Greek Police newspaper efimerida twn syntaktwn reported Monday morning that a backpack containing an explosive device was found inside the park and about 4 meters from the fence of the Courts.

According to efsyn, police examines whether it was a wrong wires connection that prohibited the explosion of the device.

The counter-terrorism department has launched an investigation.
