Greece extends fence along Evros river, border with Turkey

Greece is extending the fence barrier along the entire length of the Evros river, the natural border with Turkey.

Greek Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos and Deputy Minister Eleftherios Economou signed the relevant protocol for the extension.

In a statement, the ministry said that “rapid developments relating to the ‘instrumentalization’ of the migration issue have resulted in an unpredictable, unusual increase in migration flows extending along the country’s land borders, with unpredictable consequences for public order and security.”

For this reason, added the ministry, “it is considered necessary and urgent to extend the existing deterrent barrier in phase A, approximately 35 kilometers long, in the area between the settlement of Psathades at Didimoticho to the area of Kornofolia at Soufli, and which constitutes the first part of the total of 140 kilometers.”
