Authorities on the island of Mykonos arrested another five people on Wednesday for illegal construction works that alter the beaches and shores of the island.
The arrests reportedly followed a complaint made by a resident in the area of Ornos that the construction was being carried out in front of another hotel and without permit.
Citing information by Greek Police, website newsit.gr reports that arrested area 23-year-old Pakistani and 4 young Albanian workers who were working under the orders of a 60-year-old American citizen who is wanted by police.
According to initial information, the 60-year-old American citizen is also wanted for violating the “Immigration and Integration Code”, as he does not have the necessary documents for his legal stay in Greece, which is why he probably gave the order for the illegal work and was absent from the scene.
It is noted that one of the Albanians arrested did not have the necessary documents for his legal stay in Greece.
Their illegal operations were taking place in front of another hotel and were altering the topography of Mykonos.
On Monday, authorities reportedly arrested a 71-year-old businessman for carrying out illegal construction on a hotel he owns near Loulos Beach, on the island’s southeastern coast.
The 71-year-old faces additional charges for employing one of the foreign nationals – a 42-year-old Albanian man – even though he did not have a residence permit or social security.
The arrests, which took place on Monday, are part of an ongoing crackdown following revelations of rampant illegal construction on the Cycladic island.
The so-called “Operation Mykonos” against urban planning violations was launched after the brutal beating of an archaeologist in Mykonos in March.
So far, arrests include also workers who were constructing even inside archaeological sites.
