One of the longest-running summer festivals in Greece, the Aeschylus festival, will open in Elefsina on August 27 with a concert by Manolis Mitsias and Maria Farantouri.
The opening concert will take place at the archaeological site of Ancient Eleusis, while other scheduled events will take place other spaces in the city, which lies west of Athens.
Venues include the Old Oil and Soap Factory (Eleourgio), a landmark of Elefsina with a view to the Elefsina Gulf, as well as other open-air sites in the city.
In the 49th year of the festival, which will take place with help from the 2023 Elefsina Cultural Festival and the union of mayors (KEDE), events will include music, theater, and street opera from July 7 to September 24. It will close with a half-Marathon race. The festival is dedicated to the memory of its founder and former mayor Michalis Levendis, who passed away recently.
Among others, the schedule includes a concert with Stavros Xarchakos conducting, a hip hop night with To Sfalma & Frank the Zapper, a performance of Euripides’ “Hippolytus” (National Theater, directed by Katerina Evangelatou), and a concert honoring rock singer Vassilis Papakonstantinou’s 50-year presence in music.
