A Greek Coast Guard vessel fired warning shots to stop a speedboat carrying migrants from Turkey to the island of Rhodes. The speedboat eventually stopped, coast guards rescued the 10 migrants on board and arrested the 43-year-old human trafficker.
Nobody was hurt from the warning shots.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday morning in the sea area west of Rhodes. A Coast Guard vessel, which was on patrol, spotted a speedboat with migrants, which was heading towards the shores of Ancient Kamiros, Rhodes.
As soon as the Coast Guard spotted the speedboat they signaled him to stop. The speedboat operator, however, did not comply with the light and sound signals of the Coast Guard patrol boat. It developed a high speed in the sea area of Rhodes and, performing dangerous maneuvers, tried to ram the Coast Guard vessel.
A chase ensued and the Coast Guard of Rhodes fired warning shots in a safe area and thus the speedboat stopped.
The operator and the migrants – 7 men, 2 women and 1 child -) were rounded up by the crew of the patrol boat and taken to the new Rhodes marina.
There the migrants identified the 43-year-old operator as the smuggler who transported them.
The 43-year-old trafficker was arrested by the Central Port Authority of Rhodes, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, while the speedboat was seized.
Bravo to the Coast Guard vessel.
I hope the trafficker spends the rest of his in prison.
Frau Merkel has a lot to answer for.
