594 fires broke out in Greece in 10 days, dozens of arrests

A total of 594 fires broke out in Greece in 10 days, under heatwave conditions and with high-velocity winds, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Wednesday.

Of the 594 fires, 571 were put out before they spread. Five of them spread extensively to Dervenochoria, Corfu, Rhodes, Loutraki, Kouvaras, Egio, Karystos, Laconia, and Boeotia (Viotia).

Minister Kikilias added that the climate crisis will create more conditions that result in fires, and this battle will continue all summer long.

“The fires that burn down forests and homes every year do not start spontaneously. It is human beings who set fires, whether by negligence or intention. We all need to be very careful and aware,” he stressed.

According to Fire Service, there have been almost 100 arrests. Of them 94 were for setting a fire by negligence and 5 by intention.

The majority of the incidents had to do with agricultural works such a burning rests, fuming beehives etc.

No arrests have been made so far for the big fires on Rhodes, Corfu or Magnisia.
