Beach in Chania evacuated due to landslide risk after earthquake

An evacuation operation of beach “Glyka Nera” near Sfakia in the south coast of Chania Prefecture  was carried out on Tuesday morning, due to the fear of a landslide, following the strong earthquake on Sunday.

Teams of the Port Authority and Police went to the beach and advised the bathers to move away in order to avoid accidents from possible landslides.

At the same time, access to this particular beach from the sea with private boats or from the land via the paths has been prohibited.

 

The earthquake with epicenter in Paliiochora stroke with 4.9 R on Sunday morning and the serious injury of a Spanish tourist in Samaria gorge forced authorities to close gorges in Chania Prefecture , while scientists are monitoring the seismic activity in the area.

Samaria and Agia Irini gorges remain closed also on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, local media reported.

The tragedy of 2015

It was May 25, 2015 when a 36-year-old tourist from the Czech Republic was killed when a sudden landslide occurred in Glyka Nea beach and she was fatally injured by rocks that fell on her.
