Greece strengthens firefighting forces on 11. day of Evros/Dadia fire

Firefighters continue to battle the fire in Evros, north-eastern Greece, for 11th consecutive day. It was only on Τuesday, on the 11th day of the fire, that Greece ‘s authorities strengthened firefighting forces in the area that has burned down acres of Dadia forest, destroyed agricultural land, homes and businesses, barns and animal feed depots.

The blaze has killed estimated 4,000 farming animals, mostly sheep and goats, and has driven breeders into despair, local media reported.

Authorities needed 10 full days of a fire before they deployed the special firefighting vehicle Jumbo Track Multi to the area. The super vehicle has a capacity of 15 tons of water and the possibility to transport ten firefighters.

According to the Fire Department, extinguishing operations are concentrated in Lefkimmi, Leptokarya and Tris Vryses, where there are frequent flare-ups.

The fire in Evros has been described as the biggest wildfire ever recorded in the European Union.

Regarding the wildfire in Rodopi, there are flare-ups in the areas of Kassitera and Kirki.

A total of 475 firefighters with 100 vehicles, 16 teams on foot are operating on the fires in Evros and Rodopi, while 6 airplanes and 4 helicopters are assisting their efforts.

According to the Fire Department, scattered small outbreaks are observed on its southwest side of Mt Parnitha in north-western Athens, while strong ground forces remain in the area for fear of rekindling.

In particular, 260 firefighters with 77 vehicles, 13 teams on foot are operating in Parnitha, assisted by a helicopter.

Firefighters are also struggling to put out flare-ups in Viotia, specifically in the areas of Stiri and Kyriaki.
