Greece’s Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, has said that “a new kind of patriotism is needed” to face the threats of the Climate Crisis.
In an interview with Mega TV on Tuesday, Kikilias said that “a new kind of patriotism is needed that will concern the citizens, politicians and the structure of the state. An overall effort to support, help and save our country, in the face of the threat of the climate crisis
The Minister pointed out that the climate crisis that affects the entire planet and mainly regions such as the Mediterranean, requires cooperation and coordination of all the services involved: The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the co-competent ministries (Ministry of the Interior, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry, Interior Ministry, local administration).
“We will bring a law to Parliament, which will firstly check powers and responsibilities and impose close cooperation. And I am talking about specific things that must be made and the way we should exploit our forests. What existed in the past is over,” the minister emphasized.
PS I have no idea what he meant with “new patriotism”, most likely he neither.

I think it fits into the category of “magic spells”, although I must admit this is a new form of incantation.. In a post Harry Potter world they are becoming ever more common. The main type of spell fits into the “We are totally committed…”/”Highest priority…” category.
Take the example of the psychiatric hospital in another article. Management simply incants the magic spell: “We are totally committed to providing psychiatric care of the highest possible standard for our patients” and the problem vanishes. Take the recent major train crash. Management simply incants the magic spell: “We make the safety of our passengers our highest priority” and everything will be OK. As with most spells, of course, they don’t really work. I am sure the “We can solve climate change with a new patriotism” version will be equally successful.
Even at my advanced age I imagine a universe where politicians live in the real world rather than their fairy tale world of “Blah blah blah” but each day my hope diminishes.
Spells indeed. Magic words to cloak the problem. Abracadabra simsalabim and the problem no longer exists.
It’s everywhere. We call it bullsh*t bingo.
How about these politicians setting the right example by actually serving the interests of the people and not those of their corrupt buddies? Or their own wallets?
