Same-sex marriage bill stirs conservative ND, left-wing SYRIZA

Former New Democracy prime minister Antonis Samaras has clearly stated for the second time within a few days that he will vote against a bill legalizing same-sex marriage.

At the same time, he sharply criticized the proposal of PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis who said that there would be “no voting with party discipline” and that ND  MPs who disagree with the bill should abstain from the voting when it comes to Parliament.

“he political class, which for years has urged citizens to turn out and vote, cannot be seen to be encouraging abstention from important issues,” Samaras said.

“For years all politicians have been telling the Greek people that they should not abstain from elections and that they should vote for the good of democracy. So are we going to tell the Greek people to vote and not to abstain while telling parliamentarians and ministers to abstain?” he added.

Citing sources from the conservative ruling party, Mega TV reported that at least 53 ND MPs out of 158 in total do not plan to vote in favor of the bill, while another 45 appeared undecided saying “Maybe.” The remaining 60 MPs are to support the bill.
What is interesting to note is that in contrast it was the leader of main opposition, left-wing SYRIZA, Stefanos Kasselakis, who announced on Friday morning that he imposes “party discipline” in the bill voting.
Several SYRIZA MPs stated that they were surprised saying they were informed  about the leader’s decision from the media.
What is even more interesting is that Kasselakis forces the party MPs to vote in favor of a bill that the government has not tabled yet and its specific content is probably still in the writing process.
PM Mitsotakis announced two days ago that the bill on same-sex marriage will deprive male homosexual couples from becoming parents through a surrogate mother.
