Gov’t turns down Archbishop’s referendum for same-sex couples

The Greek government has ruled out the possibility of conducting a referendum on the matter of marriage and parenting for same-sex couples, following such a proposal by the Archbishop of Greece.

In an interview on Skai radio on Friday, Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis emphasized in an interview with Skai FM that while the government respects the role and views of the Church, it remains committed to implementing its policy program.

“This bill was one of our pre-election commitments,” the spokesman stressed.

Earlier on Friday, Archbishop Ieronymos proposed a referendum to address the issue as the conservative leadership of the conservative Greek Orthodox Church, bishops and the majority of high- and low-ranking cleric opposes the possibility of same-sex marriage and parenthood.

The people already voted for this.

  1. It’s always been “minority” rule – it doesn’t matter whether left or right ideologies because essentially they are just 2 sides of the same face controlled by the next tier up.
