Greece weather: Heavy rain and storms, powerful winds, mud showers

A cold front will affect Greece as of Monday afternoon, March 11, the meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens has forecast.

The main features of the upcoming bad weather front which will continue into tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12, will be:

  • heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms locally
  • strong to gale-force southern winds on the seas
  • falling temperatures
  • mud showers

Rainfalls and storms with the possibility of local hailstorms will occur from this afternoon in the northwestern mainland and in the northern Ionian Sea, phenomena that by the night of today and tomorrow will extend to the rest of Macedonia, Epirus and the Ionian, in the north and western Thessaly and western Sterea and Peloponnese.

During the night, rains and storms with the possibility of hailstorms will occur in Thrace and the northern Aegean, where they will be very strong in places.

From tomorrow morning the phenomena will be located mainly in the central and northern mainland, in the western Peloponnese, in the Ionian Sea and in the northern and eastern Aegean Sea.

According to the categorization of rainfall episodes (Regional Precipitation Index), which is applied by the Meteo unit of the National Observatory of Athens, the rainfall episode for tomorrow is classified as Category 2 (Moderate).Areas where most intense phenomena are forecast.

Strong to gusty winds of 6-8 Beaufort will prevail in the Ionian Sea until Monday evening and in the Aegean from Monday afternoon until Tuesday afternoon.

It should be recalled that strong, especially southern winds affect the sea traffic.

The temperature will drop by 3 to 6 degrees Celsius tomorrow in the west and on Wednesday 13/03 in the rest of the country.

It is worth noting that the concentrations of Sahara dust in the atmosphere will be relatively high and there will be mud showers in places.
