Inflation in Greece at 3.1% in April; Food prices up 5.4% on annual basis

Inflation in Greece remained over 3% in April at 3.1% from 3.2% in March and 2.9% in February 2024, the Greek Statistics authority ELSTAT announced on Tuesday. On annual basis food prices increased by 5.4%, with olive oil breaking all records with an increase of 63.7%.

The ELTAT data shows that in relation to April 2023 there are significant price increases in food service categories, namely:

  • olive oil by 63.7%
  • fruits by 11.6%
  • fish by 10.6%
  • soft drinks and juices by 12.5%
  • airline tickets by 15%
  • health insurance premiums by 14%

The increase in inflation to 3.1% compared to the April 2023 rate resulted from price increases in the following food and service groups:

-5.4% in the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages, due to price increases mainly in: rice, meats (general), fresh fish, olive oil, fruits (general), vegetables (general), sugar-chocolates-sweets-ice creams, other foods, mineral water-soft drinks-fruit juices. Part of this increase was offset by the decrease in prices mainly in: bread, pasta, dairy and eggs, other edible oils.

-2.6% in the group Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, due mainly to an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages.

– 4.0% in the Clothing and footwear group, due to price increases in clothing and footwear.

-3.6% in the Health group, mainly due to price increases in: pharmaceutical products, medical-dental and paramedical services, hospital care.

-3.2% in the Transportation group, mainly due to price increases in: new cars, used cars, car parts and accessories, fuel and lubricants, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, air passenger tickets.

-2.1% in the Leisure-Cultural activities group, due to price increases mainly in: information processing equipment, small leisure items-flowers-pets, cinemas-theatres, newspapers-books and stationery, package holidays. Part of this increase was offset by a decrease in prices mainly in leisure and cultural durables.

-3.5% in the Education group, mainly due to price increases in: preschool and primary education fees, secondary education fees, tertiary education fees.

– 5.2% in the Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants group, mainly due to an increase in prices in: restaurants-patisseries-cafes, canteens, hotels-motels-inns.

-2.3% in the Other goods and services group, mainly due to price increases in: hair salons and personal care stores, health insurance premiums, vehicle insurance premiums. Part of this increase was offset by the decrease in prices mainly in other types of personal care.

    ELSTAT information above: “The ELTAT data shows that in relation to April 2023 there are significant price increases in food…fruits 11.6%”.

    It’s almost as if Mitsotakis is lying?
