Greece’s PM hints at cap on rental days for Airbnb

Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis indicated potential measures to tighten regulations on Airbnb and other short-term rentals, including considering a cap on rental days.

“We have already enforced restrictions and requirements for those using Airbnb for commercial purposes. Additionally, we will discuss the appropriate duration for short-term rental of properties,” Mitsotakis said during an interview with Action24 channel on Wednesday.

The explosive growth of Airbnb rentals has reduced the availability of homes for stable long-term leases, exacerbating rental and property price hikes.

On Sunday, the government announced plans to consider tax incentives favoring long-term rentals and stricter penalties for non-compliance. These changes are slated for implementation in the fall.

Data collected this summer tourist season will assess the impact of the January 1 regulations, which have classified multiple property rentals as a business activity, requiring appropriate taxes and VAT, daily kathimerini recalls..

  1. Kyriakos Mitsotakis never summarises his dreamtime concerns so the people can understand:
So I will , it’s ok for him and his wealthy friends to pimp out Greece to mass tourism to the point that it affects every aspect of normal life for normal people , but normal people are not permitted to do the same , furthermore he will act against them using the law.

  2. Just another cleverly spun outcome ,which turns greek opinion against the normal Greeks ,people trying to buy a pint of milk which is 60 cents more a pint than Germany ,but with wages that are 30% lower, no wonder they rent out there house to the highest bidder, who wouldn’t?
Mitsotakis creates an economic environment for the wealthy then splashes about like a fish out of water covering up the aspects of the plan that his incompetence reveals.

    • it’s a mistake to think that it’s all incompetence. he’s doing an _excellent_ job for his true employers. it’s just that what’s good for international capital and the Davos jet-set, is not good for ordinary people.

also, wages are only 30% lower than germany? maybe more accurate to say that wages in greece are about 30% of what they are in germany!
