The General Secretariat of Civil Protection declared the island of Leros in the Dodecanese in a “state of emergency” due to the occurrence of water shortage phenomena. The state of emergency is valid for one month.
In the decision, signed by the General Secretary of Civil Protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou, it is specifically stated:
“We decide to declare a State of Civil Protection Emergency of the Municipality of Leros of the Regional Unit of Kalymnos of the South Aegean Region, for the management of the consequences that may arise from the occurrence of water shortage phenomena in the above area.”
The state of emergency is valid from the date of issuance of this document (June 25) for one (1) month, i.e. until July 25, 2024.
After the end of the specified time, the above State of Civil Protection Emergency will be lifted, without a new decision.
According to cnngreece.gr, the municipal authority of Leros places the responsibility for the situation on the previous municipal authority, complaining that it did not proceed with the maintenance of the Desalination Units.
A disgrace from those previously in charge of fresh water supplies on Leros. Take for example the waste of the proposed reservoir and now the wilful neglect regarding the servicing of the desalination plant. Those responsible should be held to account.
