Patras wildfire: Children’s hospital, elderly home evacuated

Children from a hospital and elderly from a nursing home have been evacuated as a wildfire is raging in Patras, western Greece, on Tuesday. The fire is still raging due to strong winds.

A policeman was seen carrying a needy elderly on his hands out of the nursing home.

The blaze is just 10 minutes away from the center of the city. There are reports of burned down houses and vehicles.

Mega TV showed footage as locals try to protect their homes with …water baskets.

The fire broke out i a plot close to the ring road of Patras and spread quickly due to the powerful winds.

Residents in the areas of Eglykada, Girokomeio , Aroi and Pagona received emergency sms via <112> urging them to evacuate toward safer districts.

 

Earlier, authorities evacuated the Karamandanio children’s hospital, taking the 10 young patients to the Agios Andreas general state hospital, as well as the Konstantopoulio retirement home and the “Merimna” therapeutic education center located in the same area.

Ambulances from the public EKAV, the Red Cross and the private sector assisted in the evacuations.

Strong reinforcements were sent to help get the fire in the Girokomio area under control, with a total of 80 firefighters, 26 vehicles, three teams on foot now battling the blaze.

, assisted by 4 firefighting aircraft and 6 helicopters dropping water from above.

According to the press representative of the Fire Service, Vassilis Vathrakoyiannis, shortly before 4:00 p.m. the fire brigades are battling scattered outbreaks.

According to latest information, one firefighter was injured during the operation.
