The charred body of a woman was found late on Monday in a crafts facility that was severely damaged by the fire in Patima of Halandri, in north-east Athens.
The body was identified to belong to a 65-year-old woamn from Moldavia who worked in the facility for the last 25 years.
Speaking to new website newsit.gr, the business owner said that everybody had left at 12:30 but she wanted to work overtime as she would go on vacation.
“I can’t understand why she did not leave when she saw what was happening,” he stressed adding that a branch from a burning pine tree fell on the facility that burned down within minutes.
However, speaking to protothema.gr, other workers who were in the facility said that when they saw the fire coming they rushed out telling the woman to come with.
“Nadia told us she wanted to make a phone call first,” one of the workers said.
The body of the fire victim was found in the bathroom where she allegedly had sought refuge from the fire.
Monday afternoon, there was information on news websites about a missing person in the area as the workers reported the woman as missing. However, the spokesperson of the Fire Service had dismissed such reports.
The victim had two grown up children living in her home country.
The fire in north-east Attica and Athens suburbs burning for 48 hours destroyed thousands of acres of forest and farmland, the rich wildlife, burned down houses, businesses and vehicles and set residents in panic who had to evacuate also in the middle of the night.
Tuesday morning, media report that there is no active front in the broader area.
