Greece’s Fire Service arrested two Italian tourists who started a fire at a beach of Antipaxos island in the Ionian Sea.
The two tourists are boat captains who were about to start a beach party.
According to local media, the two lit the fire on Wednesday afternoon on the beach of Pigi, next to a forest and in an area with bushes.
Prompt was the intervention of the local fire service that extinguish it fire before it spread around, Investigating officers arrested the two men for violation of the “anti-fire period law” that forbids fires outdoors until the end of October.
At noon on Thursday, the two Italians were taken to prosecutor on the island of Corfu and were fined 2,250 euros each.
Later, the court ruled that the two were innocent.
Both Italians apologized to the Greek authorities for the fire, claiming that they did not know about the total ban due to the fire protection period, while the fact that they themselves rushed and immediately put out the fire was crucial for the acquittal.
Antipaxos is located 3 nautical miles of the island of Paxos and close to Corfu.
